We're holidng our 1st Wed. Film Discussion on the 2nd Wed. of the month due to the New Year holiday. Please join us for the matinee show and a lively discussion afterwards!

 

Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen star in this uplifting drama about a dignified African-American pianist who hires a rough-edged Italian-American bouncer to chauffeur him across the American South in the 1960s. Based on the true story of Don Shirley, GREEN BOOK is an exploration of race and friendship elevated by two exceptional performances, which bring the right touch of humor to a serious subject.

 

ABOUT THE 1ST WEDNESDAY FILM DISCUSSION:

Join us on the first Wednesday of the month at Ambler Theater for the afternoon showing of the chosen film. Each film will be announced 10 days before the showing, and the discussion afterward will be moderated by library staff and theater staff.

Grandparents across the state are finding themselves in the position where they need to step in to help raise their grandchildren.

  • In Pennsylvania, more than 195,000 children are living with their grandparents.
  • Nearly 1/3 of grandparents raising grandchildren are 60 years of age are older, nearly 60% are in the work force and nearly 20% are living in poverty.
  • For every child in foster care with relatives, there are 20 children being raised in grand families outside of the foster care system.

 Three new laws have passed in Pennsylvania related to grandparent custody.  What are they and what are your options when seeking custody?  Get the information YOU need to make an informed decision when the best interests and welfare of a child hangs in the balance.

Who Was Harriet Tubman?

Join us for an exciting portrayal of Harriet Tubman.  Watch and learn as reenactor Dr. Daisy Century brings Harriet Tubman’s indomitable spirit  to life in this engaging one-woman show!  ALL AGES ARE WELCOME!  Kids, teens, and adults!  SAY YOU'LL BE THERE!  RSVP at historywvpl.eventbrite.com or email events@wvpl.org.

Harriet Tubman was a brave woman who worked as a Union spy and nurse during the Civil War.  She rescued more than 70 slaves using the Underground Railroad.   Tubman encouraged people to put others first and claimed that during her Railroad days, “I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.”  Dr. Century's portrayal will take each and every audience member along for this ride!  

 Trained as a teacher, Dr. Daisy Century earned a BA in Biology at Claflin College, a Master’s in Science Education from South Carolina University and a PhD from Temple University, also in Science Education.  Dr. Century has been a performer with the American Historical Theatre(AHT) since 1999.  She has appeared in venues that include the National Defense Organization, Belmont Mansion, National Archives, Sojourner Truth House, Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site, the Helicopter Museum, and numerous schools, libraries, museums and historic sites throughout New Jersey.
