The Star-Spangled Songbook: The 1930s

This program is presented in relation to Montgomery County Public Libraries’ One Book, One County selection for Spring 2016, Daniel James Brown’s The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. 

Our exploration of the events of the 1930s continues with The Star-Spangled Songbook: The 1930s, a musical celebration of the great American composers and lyricists who crafted a body of work that is uniquely American.  This edition focuses on the decade known as the Turbulent Thirties, the decade of the Great Depression which created traumatic economic hardship and yet also saw a proliferation of new technologies, especially in the fields of radio and film. Songs include "Stormy Weather", "I'm In The Mood For Love", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Blue Moon", "All Of Me", "Pennies From Heaven", and "Cheek To Cheek."

An Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
The Mindfulness Institute at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, Philadelphia, PA

The Philadelphia region's leading provider of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs comes to WVPL with this powerful workshop.   This program provides a taste of the fundamental of MSBR which has been shown to reduce anxiety,  depression, and pain, and to improve well-being.  Through meditation and awareness exercises, we will explore this practical time-proven approach to living fully in the present moment that has helped thousands of people achieve greater balance, vitality and health.

To fully explore the exercises, this workshop will run 90 minutes.  Participants are encouraged to  wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

This program is presented in relation to Montgomery County Public Libraries’ One Book, One County selection for Spring 2016, Daniel James Brown’s The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.  The One Book, One County initiative will  culminate on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 with Brown’s appearance at two public events. 

Dr. Bachrach’s program brings the games of  1936 Summer Olympics to life with fascinating profiles of the organizers, the politicians and the athletes.   She is staff historian in the Exhibitions Department at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

This program will be presented concurrently at both Ambler and Blue Bell branches.
